New announcements
- The Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) is launching Round 12 of the Ontario Research Fund-Research Excellence (ORF-RE) Applications are due to the ministry by September 27, 2023. ORS has developed an internal Notice of Intent process, as well as a timeline for the development of competitive applications. Please see the ORS information and deadlines below for details.
- NSERC Discovery Grant – 2024 Competition Announcement – Notification of Intent to Apply Webinars: June 22 and July 4 @ 1:00 pm (Consult the Live Q&A sessions page)
- The Office of Research Services has launched a call for Expressions of Interest for faculty members wishing to be nominated as Fellows to the Royal Society of Canada, or as Members of the College of New Scholars, Scientists and Artists. Expressions of Interest are due to ORS by July 10. Please see the full program details below.
- SSHRC Insight Grant – October 2023 Competition Guidelines are now posted. SSHRC will hold a webinar to provide information concerning the upcoming competition via WebEx, including a question-and-answer session on August 17, 2023, 1:00-2:30pm (advance registration is not required). Please see ORS information about internal deadlines for application review We will out additional Insight Grant information and resources in the next week.
- Mitacs Elevate Program updates: applications are being accepted year-round, proposals are now submitted via the online portal, standard $60,000/year award, open to all sectors and disciplines.
- Lab2Market Oceans / Validate 2023-24 Program Open – Applications are due July 31, 2023. Lab2Market Validate allows researchers to test and evaluate the market potential of their innovations critically. This carefully curated 16-week experience (8 weeks full-time) for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers is complemented by funding, exercises, workshops, and mentorship from industry experts – all with exploration at its core. - The invention to Innovation (i2I) program sponsored by Mitacs is now accepting applications for their fall 2023 cohort, due July 4, 2023. The Invention to Innovation (i2I) program provides entrepreneurship training for Mitacs interns, fellows and recent alumni. Over the 8-month opportunity, participants develop an entrepreneurial mindset to help them commercialize their inventions. Participants also develop translational skills, enabling research scientists to contribute to new product development and commercialization in the industry. Reminders
- SSHRC-Mitacs Joint Initiative: Starting 2023-24: SSHRC applicants (PEG, PDG, PG-S2, IG) can simultaneously apply for Mitacs Accelerate internships (IDG in 2025). The advantages of the joint program are to: strengthen training and mentoring plans, access additional funding for student and postdoctoral resources, Reinforce engagement with partners and stakeholders, and develop skills and qualifications of students and postdoctoral researchers.
High-level process: (1) SSHRC applicant applies to Mitacs for Accelerate internships one week after SSHRC application deadline; (2) Mitacs and SSHRC conduct merit review separately; (3) Mitacs communicates results to Accelerate applicants after SSHRC does the same for its applicants.

- Update from the NSERC-SSHRC Awards Administration Team regarding the extension request process for grants requiring an extension due to pandemic delays.
- CIHR – Mock Review Toolkit: The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is pleased to announce the launch of the Mock Review Toolkit. The Toolkit is designed to allow individuals to familiarize themselves with CIHR’s peer review process by simulating the Project Grant competition. Using the Toolkit as a resource, users will be able plan, organize and run mock peer review sessions, from a light round table to a full mock review panel.
- NSERC announces cooperation with the Swiss National Science Foundation – Complementary NSERC and SNSF funding opportunities will allow Canadian and Swiss researchers to access support for joint research projects.
- City Studio Durham has projects for faculty and students, including projects on workplace modernization, carbon capture, building resilience for displaced residents and others.
- Revisions made to CIHR Application Administration Guide to bring clarity on policy 3.6 regarding compensation for co-applicants and trainees.
- New National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships to protect Canadian Science and Research

Funding Opportunities
Grants Officers will provide administrative review of grant applications to ensure completeness with agency guidelines and assist with institutional signatures. Please notify your Grants Officer as soon as possible of your intent to apply to any opportunity and submit your application for administrative review a minimum of five business days before the agency deadline.
