Important Updates to the Joint NSERC Alliance - Mitacs Accelerate Program
The current joint NSERC Alliance - Mitacs Accelerate funding opportunity allows applicants to leverage cash contributions from partners for funding from both NSERC and Mitacs. As a result of an amended agreement between Mitacs and NSERC coming into effect on April 1, 2026, the funding structure for the joint NSERC Alliance - Mitacs Accelerate program will be changing.
The joint NSERC Alliance - Mitacs Accelerate program will continue under the current funding structure where it allows partner funds to meet the matching requirements of both NSERC and Mitacs (i.e. double leveraging of the partner cash contributions with NSERC and Mitacs) for the remainder of the 2025-26 Fiscal Year. Beginning April 1, 2026, partner funds can no longer be used to meet the matching requirements of both Mitacs and NSERC for new applications (i.e. partners will be required to provide funds separately towards the Mitacs and NSERC programs).
In order to secure double leveraging of partner funds under the program’s current funding structure with NSERC and Mitacs, applicants must submit a new Mitacs streamlined application outlining the requested Mitacs internships to NSERC, along with their NSERC application by December 19, 2025.
Please notify your Grants Officer as soon as possible, but no later than August 29, 2025, if you wish to submit a joint NSERC-Mitacs application under the current funding structure. Your Grants Officer will work with you to go over the new application requirements and the internal deadlines necessary to meet the Agency deadlines. Please note that participation in this joint program would also be subject to availability in our Mitacs Accelerate internship unit allocation.
