Volunteer Opportunities for Community and Legal Members
The Ontario Tech University Research Ethics Board (REB) is seeking expressions of interest from qualified individuals interested in serving as volunteer members of the REB. Appointments are for a two- or three-year renewable term, with start dates determined based on availability and mutual agreement.
Serving on the REB provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the ethical oversight of research involving human participants and to help ensure that research conducted under the auspices of Ontario Tech University meets the highest ethical standards.
About the Research Ethics Board
The REB plays a critical role in supporting the ethical conduct of research involving human participants in accordance with the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2, 2022), applicable regulations, university policies, and recognized best practices. Community and legal members provide valuable independent perspectives that promote transparency, accountability, and public trust in the research review process.

Community Members
We are seeking members of the broader community who can contribute an independent public perspective to the review of research ethics applications.
Eligibility requirements:
- Must have no current or prior affiliation with Ontario Tech University.
- Must not be a current or former employee or student of Ontario Tech University.
- Demonstrated interest in ethics, community engagement, or public accountability is an asset.
Legal Member
We are seeking a legal member who can contribute expertise on legal and regulatory considerations relevant to human participant research. The legal member will participate in the ethical review of research protocols by providing insight into applicable legal frameworks, including privacy, confidentiality, consent, and data governance, and will contribute to REB discussions regarding participant protections and relevant legal considerations.
Eligibility requirements:
- Must possess legal training and experience and be knowledgeable in legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to human participant research, including privacy legislation, health information legislation, consent requirements, and the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2).
- Must not be a current employee of Ontario Tech University.
