Ontario Tech University Student Training Assistantships in Research (STAR) awards

What is a STAR award?

  • This award will provide undergraduate students the opportunity to work on a research project with a supervising faculty member.
  • The award is intended to stimulate student interest in research, increase undergraduate experiences with research and encourage students to continue on to graduate studies.
  • Funds for these awards are provided by Ontario Tech University with additional support from supervising faculty members.
  • Successful students will receive $4,500 to $7,000 over a period of 12 to 16 weeks (May through August) for full-time work on a research project.


To apply, students must meet the following requirements: 

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada or international student.
  • Be a registered Ontario Tech University student (at the time you apply) in a bachelor’s degree program.
  • Have obtained, over the previous year of study, a cumulative average of at least a B- (70 per cent, 2.7 grade points).
  • Have completed at least one full year of university course work (two full academic semesters) by the start of the research project (May 2020)

Selection criteria

Successful applicants will be chosen based on the following criteria as demonstrated in their transcripts and Statement of Interest:

  • High academic standing based on cumulative grades from your previous years of study.
  • Level of experience and training relevant to the specific research project position you have applied to work on.
