FedDev Ontario Success Stories

Faculty members and students from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) recently completed 13 collaborative projects with industry businesses from across southwestern Ontario.

The projects were funded by the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario). FedDev Ontario was created as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan to support businesses and communities in southern Ontario. The pilot program was designed to address the gap between small- and medium-size enterprises and post-secondary institutions. Launched in 2010, the goal was to accelerate innovation, improve productivity, create jobs and contribute to the creation of globally competitive Ontario companies with fewer than 1,000 employees.

One of its programs, the Applied Research and Commercialization (ARC) Initiative, provided UOIT with $739,000 in 2010 to fund academic-industry collaborations. A second contribution of $639,000 was received in 2012 for 11 more projects. This money supports the direct costs of the projects, including support for students, materials and supplies, travel and some administrative costs for UOIT.
